Grace's CC v Sri Lankan Wanderers CC
3 September 2006

Grace's continued their winning ways with a fine win over Sri Lankan Wanderers, who after their heavy defeat last year promised tougher opposition this season. So it proved when on winning the toss the Grace's opening batsmen strode out on a beautiful sunny afternoon to face one of the fastest bowlers that they have met this year, to be complemented at the other end by one of the most accurate. Progress was at the most steady until Camberwell strove to break the shackles - aiming to on-drive the fast bowler he edged an incredible six over third man. The partnership was broken on 32 when Stockinger was out LBW. Camberwell followed, run out with the score at 56, but by now acting skipper Mendis had his eye in and was on his way to a blistering 55 before holing out on the boundary. Shofiq continued to take the game to their opponents with a well hit 48 without being quite at his best. With useful contributions from all of their batsmen Grace's totalled 206-9 from their 40 overs.

The Sri Lankans started cautiously but soon lost their first wicket to Bielby. There followed a stand of 30 before Bielby claimed his second wicket, followed by a disastrous run-out of the promising young Sri Lankan opener. Then came an incredible knock by the fast bowler who hit five sixes and two fours in what for Grace's was a mercifully short stay at the crease before falling lbw to Ahkter, who was the pick of the bowlers. In the end the Sri Lankans were all out for 154, the Grace's winning margin being 52. Grace's then entertained their visitors to a very pleasant social evening in the pavilion bar.
